Pre-Purchase Car Inspection Melbourne for European Vehicles
Buying a used European car without an independent inspection is a gamble. A clean-looking BMW, Mercedes or Audi can hide thousands of dollars in worn components, hidden accident damage, or repairs that are about to fall due. A pre-purchase car inspection from Euro Centre Automotive gives you a clear mechanical picture of the vehicle before you sign anything or transfer a cent.
Our team specialises in European vehicles and brings 15+ years of experience working on Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche, Volvo, Land Rover and Skoda. We know the model-specific weak points, we use dealer-level diagnostic equipment, and we put every finding in writing.
What's Included in a Pre-Purchase Inspection
A pre-purchase inspection at our Airport West workshop is a thorough mechanical and electronic check carried out on a hoist, with the right tools for the job. The inspection covers:
- Engine condition: oil leaks, timing chain noise, smoke under load, signs of oil consumption or head gasket issues
- Transmission and drivetrain: gearbox operation (DSG, ZF 8-speed, 7G-Tronic and others), clutch wear, driveshaft and CV joint condition
- Brakes: pad and disc thickness, fluid quality, calliper operation
- Suspension and steering: bushes, ball joints, control arms, wheel alignment indicators
- Tyres: tread depth, wear pattern, age (DOT code), brand consistency across axles
- Battery and charging system: load test and alternator output check
- Cooling system: coolant condition, radiator, hoses, water pump signs
- Underbody: rust, accident damage, sump and transmission damage, exhaust condition
- Body and paintwork: signs of previous accident repairs, panel mismatches, paint overspray
- Diagnostic scan: live data and stored fault codes across all modules
- Service history review against the manufacturer’s prescribed schedule
- Road test covering local roads and higher-speed sections to assess gearbox shifts, steering, brakes and engine behaviour under load.
You receive a written inspection report with photos, an honest assessment of immediate concerns, upcoming maintenance items, and an overall verdict on the vehicle’s condition.
Known European Vehicle Issues We Check For
European cars have well-documented model-specific weak points. Knowing what to look for is the line between a generic inspection and a specialist one. Examples we routinely check:
- timing chain stretch, an early indicator of a costly failure
Timing chain tensioner failures, oil consumption on EA888 engines, DSG mechatronic faults
Injector and fuel pump issues on diesels, balance shaft wear on M272/M273 V6 engines, ABC suspension on older S-Class
Land Rover and Range Rover
Air suspension compressor failures, timing cover oil leaks, EGR cooler issues
IMS bearing on 996 and early 997 models, coolant pipe corrosion on Cayenne, water pump failures across the range
Volvo
Electronic throttle module (ETM) faults, PCV system issues, transmission cooler leaks on XC60/XC90
If the car you’re considering has a known weak point, we’ll check it specifically and tell you whether it’s been addressed or is likely to surface soon.
When You Should Book a Pre-Purchase Inspection
The cars most worth inspecting before purchase include:
- Private sales, where there’s no consumer warranty and limited recourse if something fails
- Small dealer or yard sales, where the inspection history may be vague
- Interstate purchases before paying for transport
- Auction listings where independent inspection is permitted
- Higher-mileage prestige cars where condition matters more than year or odometer
- Any European car priced suspiciously below market, which often means the seller knows something the listing doesn’t say
If you’re spending five figures (or more) on a used Euro, the cost of an inspection is a fraction of the risk you’re taking without one.
Why Melbourne Buyers Trust Our Pre-Purchase Inspections
- European specialisation, with 15+ years working on prestige and performance vehicles every day
- Dealership training from Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen
- VicRoads Licensed Roadworthy Tester on staff
- Dealer-level diagnostic equipment, the same tools used by main dealers
- Written, photo-supported report delivered the same day in most cases
- No pressure, no commission. We don’t sell the cars we inspect, so our only job is to give you the truth
How It Works
Step 1: Get a quote: Call us on (03) 9310 3014 or use our online enquiry form with the car’s make, model, year and rego or VIN. We’ll quote upfront based on the vehicle.
Step 2: Bring the car to us: Arrange for the seller to drop the car at our Airport West workshop, or drive it over with their permission. A hoist inspection in our workshop catches things a driveway check never will.
Step 3: Inspection and report: We carry out the full inspection over 1.5 to 2 hours, including the road test, and prepare your written report.
Step 4: Honest verdict: We walk you through the findings before you decide. The report gives you what you need to move ahead, negotiate the price down, or step away from the deal without regret.
Booking Your Pre-Purchase Inspection
Call (03) 9310 3014 or send an enquiry through our contact form. Have the car’s details ready (make, model, year, rego or VIN, asking price) so we can quote and book you in straight away.
Our workshop is at 40 Fraser Street, Airport West VIC 3042, easily reached from Essendon, Niddrie, Tullamarine, Strathmore, Moonee Ponds, Keilor East, Pascoe Vale and the wider Melbourne metro area.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a pre-purchase car inspection cost?
Cost varies depending on the make, model and depth of inspection required. Call us on (03) 9310 3014 with the car’s details, and we’ll quote upfront before any work is booked.
How long does a pre-purchase inspection take?
Most inspections take 1.5 to 2 hours, including the road test and report preparation. Complex vehicles or cars needing extended diagnostic work may take longer.
Can you inspect the car at the seller's location?
Inspections are carried out at our Airport West workshop because we need a hoist, full diagnostic equipment and proper lighting. Driveway or carpark inspections miss the issues that only show up underneath. The seller will need to bring the car to us, or you can arrange to drive it over with their permission.
Do you check the vehicle's accident history?
The physical inspection identifies signs of previous accident damage, including repainted panels, replaced sections, mismatched body lines and evidence of structural repair. For a full ownership and write-off history, we recommend a separate PPSR check before purchase. We can talk you through how to do one.
What happens if the inspection finds problems?
You receive a detailed report explaining what we found, how serious each issue is, and what it will likely cost to address. You can then choose to walk away, negotiate the price with the seller, or proceed with full information. The decision is always yours.
Can you inspect non-European cars?
Our specialisation is European vehicles. For Japanese, Korean or American makes, give us a call first. We may still be able to help, or recommend a workshop better suited to your specific car.
Will you tell me whether to buy the car?
Yes. We’ll give you our honest opinion on the car’s condition and whether the asking price is fair given what we’ve found. The final call is yours, but we’ll be straight about what we’d do if it were our money.

I can not speak highly enough about Ziz
Your work and honesty is unremarkable.. ill be definitely coming back to service my car. Thank you so much getting my car back to brand new!

I have owned two VW Golfs recently, my first a Mk5 GTI which needed some well overdue servicing when I purchased it, I was highly recommended to Ziz from a colleague.

I was near this shop when my car wouldn’t start. The owner past by and helped me. If he can go out of his way to help someone who isn’t paying, think about how well he must treat his paying customers. A small act of kindness, but it deserves a review. Thank you again!!
